Why “Just Think Positively” Doesn’t Work for Anxiety
“Just think positively.”
“Just stop thinking about it.”
“It’s fine, stop stressing.”
Sound familiar?
If only it were that easy. If only those words could magically turn us into Buddha and dissolve every problem into the sunset.
But if you’ve ever experienced anxiety, you know those words often do the opposite. Instead of feeling better, you start stressing about the fact that you feel anxious. You spiral into “what’s wrong with me” and the cycle continues.
Here’s the truth: as well-intentioned as that advice might be, it misses one very important piece.
Your body.
Anxiety is not just a mindset problem. If your body doesn’t feel safe, your nervous system stays on high alert. You unconsciously start scanning for more reasons to be anxious. Your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours follow your body’s lead.
This is why when you feel anxious, your number one priority needs to be relaxing your body.
Your body is the gateway to dissolving anxiety. It is also the foundation for improving your work performance, creating deeper relationships, and building unshakable confidence. Without addressing what is happening in your body, mindset work will only take you so far.
This is the exact reason I focus so much on nervous system regulation with my 1:1 clients. When the body feels safe, the mind can follow. That’s where real change happens.
